ChatGPT Deep Research Review: Is It Worth the Upgrade for Founders?

A Founders Wire visual brief — commissioned for this report.

If you’re using a payment plan for ChatGPT, you’ve most likely seen the Deep Research button and are wondering if upgrading will be worth it. If you still use the free plan, you’re probably trying to figure out if you should do the research yourself or hire a virtual assistant to handle it.

The short answer is that ChatGPT Deep Research is essential for handling tasks like market research, competitor analysis, and vendor vetting. OpenAI includes Deep Research in the $20-per-month ChatGPT Plus plan at no extra cost, making the plan a better option for founders.

What Deep Research does differently

ChatGPT Deep Research

A typical conversation with ChatGPT will give you answers that are already in the model’s database. Sometimes, it includes internet search results if you ask for it.

Deep Research operates differently. If you give it a brief to work on, it scans through lots of different sources for several minutes compiling information. When it satisfies its search intent, it presents the result in a structured report format. OpenAI built Deep Research to handle the kinds of tasks founders tackle, not conversational discussions.

Access and limits depend on a particular plan. It is not available for the Free or Go versions of ChatGPT. For the $20 per month Plus plan, you will be able to use Deep Research for a limited number of research tasks each month. When you get to the limit, ChatGPT takes you to a less detailed research model. The Pro plan, which is either $100 or $200 monthly, allows you to do more Deep Research. This plan is best for founders who use ChatGPT consistently. OpenAI also includes Deep Research in ChatGPT Business and Enterprise plans.

The number of times you can use Deep Research before you get to the limit isn’t always consistent. OpenAI has frequently changed the limit since its launch, but you can check your usage history in your ChatGPT app.

Where it earns its keep, and where it doesn’t

ChatGPT Deep Research comparison

For research that founders are most likely to carry out, Deep Research is excellent in gathering information and data. It can gather competitor landscape, market size, or a survey faster than manual research or a paid virtual assistant.

What a founder needs to do is give the research model a detailed brief about certain aspects like market survey, best strategies to implement during the growth phase, etc., and it will produce a structured research report in a short time.

For instance, a founder can ask Deep Research for a detailed report on the topic: What are the fastest-growing SaaS categories in fintech for SMEs?

How to Structure Better Research Prompts

In addition, a founder can also ask for a detailed breakdown on certain aspects on the main topic, such as:

  • Defining the scope
  • Identifying main SaaS categories in fintech for SMEs
  • Measuring growth signals for each category
  • Identifying leading companies in each category
  • Analyzing why each category is growing
  • Compare growth speed across categories
  • Summarizing final insight

Where Deep Research Falls Short

Although Deep Research finds it difficult to make judgment decisions based on context. It won’t know the competitors that matter to you or what area you’re looking to build your market in, etc. OpenAI also mentioned it hallucinates, meaning it is prone to mistakes, misquoting sources, and sounding certain in cases where it isn’t.

Founders should note that any Deep Research report shouldn’t be submitted to an investor or a client without appraisal. See the report as a draft that needs to be worked on, not as a finished product.

Deep Research vs. Other Research Options

Compared to other options any founder might consider, the trade-offs are straightforward.

Employing the services of a virtual assistant may cost more and it’ll take longer for your report to be ready. But the difference is they’re human and they can judge, as well as ask certain questions if they don’t understand your brief. Perplexity is quite good for quick fact-finding, but it can’t handle multi-source research.

The last alternative is doing it yourself. It won’t cost you anything, you’ll tailor the research to your needs, but it will take a lot of time.

Deep Research combines parts of all alternatives into one. It is cheaper than a virtual assistant, more detailed than Perplexity, and faster than humans.

Pricing across US, UK, Canada, and Nigeria markets

ChatGPT Deep Research value cost

Deep Research isn’t paid for differently. What you’re actually paying for is the ChatGPT tier that gives you access to use it.

For US, UK, and Canada-based founders, it is a simple decision to make. The $20 per month Plus plan gives you access to Deep Research, so you don’t need to upgrade to a higher tier to use it. Plus is a good tier for founders who don’t need lots of research. The $100 and $200 Pro plans are for founders that do a lot of Deep Research work every week and frequently exhaust their limits.

In Nigeria, the situation is quite complicated due to payment problems like foreign exchange scarcity, low spending limits, platform level rejections and the rest. ChatGPT charges in USD, and a lot of Nigerian bank cards cannot be used to make international payments for subscriptions and the like. The official exchange rate at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market is ₦1,380 to one dollar, which means a Plus subscription would cost ₦27,600. But because Nigerian bank cards don’t work, you’ll need to use a USD virtual card, which usually comes with extra charges and exchange rate costs so you’re often paying about ₦31,000+ per month

So Nigerians end up paying more than the official conversion rate because of this payment problem. If you’re making payments in Nigeria, you would need to have more money than the official exchange amount to be on the safe side and to make sure your card has enough limit for automatic monthly renewal.

Is It Worth It?

ChatGPT Deep Research scenarios

Is it worth it for US, UK, and Canadian founders? Yes, it is.

Deep Research comes with this subscription payment. For founders who carry out research on their competitors or the market, it is worth every dollar paid. As long as you don’t do a lot of research, you don’t need to subscribe to a higher plan. Your current plan can serve your purpose efficiently.

Is it worth it for Nigerian founders? Yes, but there are conditions attached to it. The tool is useful for founders but the fact that you’re paying more than the actual price because of problems with Nigerian bank cards, exchange rates, and virtual USD card fees makes it hard.

If you own a virtual dollar card for other subscriptions, it’s easy to make payments for ChatGPT Plus with it. But if you’re looking to get one, be sure that what you’re looking to use the tool for is worth every effort and added cost.

You don’t need to upgrade if: you’re not going to extensively use Deep Research. If you need an AI tool to answer certain queries and small questions like what is a competitor pricing range or what regulations does a product need to meet?, you can use Google or for more precise answers, Perplexity is another alternative.

Skip the upgrade if: you have no plans to appraise the report you’ll be giving to your investors or clients after using Deep Research. There’s no need to spend money if you completely trust Deep Research and you’re not going to fact-check its results.

What to use instead: You can use Perplexity for fast answers to simple questions; you can employ a virtual assistant to handle the research or you can do it in your own time; or lastly, you can use the regular ChatGPT model for simple questions that don’t need a full, structured report.
